STR is beyond excited to have two of our favourite artists together on a split cassette. Both Joplin, MO based Whettman Chelmets and Portland’s qualchan. have unique, recognizable (and complementary) styles, each crafting exquisitely detailed compositions where texture is a key element in conveying emotion.
For Side A, Whettman Chelmets employed a range of classical techniques to compose variations on a melody that qualchan. had sent. The results are as gorgeous as they are different, and while there are clear reminders of Chelmets’ previous shoegaze-industrial-ambient amalgams, this release sees breaking new sonic territory which at times recalls something like Mike Paradinas’ on-the-grid, synth-heavy, classical-infused material - while totally fresh, dynamic and beautiful.
On Side B, qualchan. presents us with a sublime series of moody, slow-house miniatures. It’s a style he’s refined over the years into a truly signature sound. Inspired by nature, specifically Oregon’s Cascade region, as well as the work of artists such as Madlib, Wolfgang Voigt and Jefre Cantu Ledesma, the spacious composition of these low-slung, woozy grooves simultaneously evokes ecstasy and unease.
